Road Trip April - Day 21

April 2nd 2026 (Thursday)

Lazy morning didn't see us really moving until gone 10am!! But a rest is sometimes needed and the weather was pants and not really inspiring us to get up and out, this time also gave us a chance to catch up on phone calls & emails and work out what we wanted to do still. Plan discussed it was time to get going, today's trip is a 2hr drive to go see Devils Tower in Wyoming.

Our first stop of the day was at Aladdin to visit the 137yr General Store, old trading place, bar, post office and RV park. The town sign says "Population 15" and turns out the lady who currently runs the place, Jordan, was born in the town is #7 of the 15 count population!! The store itself is an amazing place, both the decor and the items for sale, it is a real timewarp but great fun. They also hold various events throughout the season, so it's a real visitor hotspot and most definitely worth the detour to visit!

Devils Tower, Wyoming first glimpse of it in the distance

Then it was back on the road and within a short time we suddenly spotted Devils Tower standing tall in the distance, like a beacon calling us in. There are ample rest areas where you can take plenty of pictures along the way.

The entrance fee is $25, but if you are a National Parks pass holder (as we are) then entry is free. Due to being out of season we were able to drive right up to the visitors centre and park without issue. There are plenty of trails that you can take and all seem to be well maintained, we chose the one closest to the tower that circles around it, it is about 1.5miles. The weather was cold and during our walk we had a small hail shower.

The tower itself is really hard to describe, the emotions it invokes, it's unbelievable to see up close and personal - the sheer size of it.  It has a strength, a power & really is very imposing and has a real presence too. There's much evidence of spiritual worship here and a sense of peace too. I'm not really describing it very well, it's just jaw dropping with its magnitude. It has also featured in many movies, the most notible of which is probably 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind', which had naturally been our movie viewing the night before.

Devils Tower, Wyoming in all its intriquing beauty

We unfortunately missed the visitor centres opening hours but have enough pictures to remind us of our adventure here and this is another bucket list item ticked off our list.

We took the quick journey home as it was getting late and we just wanted to get back and put our feet up. We decided we should watch one of favourite movies, the sci-fi comedy 'Paul', another that featured 'Devils Tower',
