Road Trip April - Day 28

April 9th 2026 (Thursday)

Lazy start to the day as we're both feeling a bit exhausted from the last few days driving. It is a beautiful day and the sun is shining, though there is still a cool wind, we really have been very lucky with the weather on this road trip, especially given the time of year.

As we are so late leaving the campground, our first stop is to Dr Evermore's Sculpture Park, The site opens at 11am and being just 20mins down the road, it seems a good place to start the day's adventures.

All I can say it 'Oh my goodness'!! This place is utterly unbelievable, fantastic sculptures, that the more you study them the more you notice one each one, the level of detail that has been put into them and all from all sorts scrap metal. It is truly amazing really, Dr Evermore was an incredibly talented man and visionary artist.

Dr. Evermor's Forevertron is the 2nd largest scrap metal sculpture in the world, standing 50 ft. high and 120 ft. wide, and weighing 300 tons. Built in the 1980s

During our time here we had the good fortune to meet the late Dr Evermore's wife & daughter, whom we had a chance to talk a lot more about how it all came about. We were so pleased to have had the opportunity to stop here. It is definitely a must see place if you're in the area so do take the time to visit, it's eye opening and fantastical for sure!

Next stop is to another last minute, 'wasn't in the plan, but just happen to see it on Google maps and now we must go' kinda place (I'm very good at finding those, according to Fred!) and turns out we were meant to come here. It is Iowa 80, worlds largest truckstop located in Walcott, Iowa. And, yeah, they're not wrong, this place is mahoosive!!

The outside is very busy with cars, trucks, RVs constantly moving around, this place never sleeps! Inside its HUGE, lots of space, eateries and things of interest, nice selection in the gift shops too and reasonably priced. There is also a theatre, chiropractor, barber, laundrette, showers, LOTS of truck parts and accessrories - the works!! All incredibly clean and very welcoming. The bonus is you can park overnight at no charge.

Alongside the main truck stop is the Iowa 80 Trucking Museum, a place much bigger than I had anticipated, filled with all manner of truck vehicles from all eras, all beautifully restored and displayed. We discovered it is a private collection of the owners, which the Dad, Bill Moon started, purely as a hobby alongside owning & running the truck stop. On his passing in 1992 the family made it into a museum in memory of him, which opened in 2008, keeping it going, and even extending the building and adding to the collection since.

The museum is free to enter, they just ask for voluntary donations to help maintain the collection. I am truly impressed with the range of vehicles they have on display - especially for a private collection! It has been nicely laid out and it is so nice to see them being preserved so well and on display for others to see and enjoy. There's a little gift shop so of course we had to add to our fridge magnet collection! The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming and very forthcoming with information about the place, so much so, they allowed us to park in a select quieter spot away from the main truck stop for the night which was super kind.

This whole place, from the main truck stop to the museum is a must see, but allow yourself plenty of time to really look round as there is a lot to look at and enjoy. An amazing, unexpected find and so pleased we did the slight detour to find it.

Of course tonight's movie whilst relaxing in Wanda2 is Convoy, widely considered the ultimate, number-one trucking movie so very appropriate. Let them trucker's roll, 10-4!!
