Road Trip March - Day 5

March 17th 2026 (Tuesday)  - St Patricks Day

OH MY GOODNESS!! The wind last night, had the van rocking ALL night long and it's still blowing strong this morning, it's absolutely freezingly cold too! The wind whips into you and freezes you to the bone it is so bitterly COLD!!! So we donned our thermals and wrapped up warm and headed into Manhattan, we hadn't got any plan as such for today, just see where our feet took us.

We ended up at Edge, Observation Deck, a 100ft up platform ledge that you stand on for amazing 360° views, even has a glass floor & tilted side walls to give that more "open" feeling - it truly is something and we picked a perfect clear day to go up. Whilst there we decided to celebrate St Patrick's day with an Irish coffee - something to warm up with!

  • the City of New York as viewed from the Edge platform

Then it was back down to ground level & back outside, here we took a short walk along the High Line walkway, it's worth walking along as it gives you a unique elevated view of Manhatten and in the right season there are lovely gardens for you to admire or sit amongst.

From here we walked across to Times Square, somewhere Fred had never been, stopped to sit on the famous red stairs and ate our lunch, people watched and just enjoyed the day and city vibes, Times Square is just a constant flurry of activity and noise.

From here we walked up to Central Park, again another place Fred hadn't been, last time I was here was when I ran the New York Marathon in 2016 so it was great to explore the park together, of particular highlight was the busker situated inside the Bethesda Terrace building who sang a beautiful operatic tune, with the building adding extra accoustics to her voice. The building itself is very pretty inside, here's a short video, with the lady singing.

Then it was time to head back to the RV - we had been out all day, walked over 7 miles, did over 30,000 steps and truthfully we were utterly shattered!!

Tonight, safely tucked back in the warmth of the RV we admired the crystal clear view of Manhattan at night, the Empire states building was lit up in green to celebrate St Patrick's day and it's been a fantastic day.

Road Trip Day 5 - no miles travelled in the RV, but on foot we did over 7 miles!!
