Today, I've woken up with a very sore throat and feeling like utter, utter crap. Being ill on the road is not a fun thing, especially when we have lots of travelling and exploring to do! Luckily, I'm not often unwell, but still I'm a little bit ploddy getting going this morning, so Fred treated me to a coffee at Starbucks to try and jump start me lol. Though to be fair he does spoil me often with Starbucks.
Whilst preparing for the day's adventures, I received an unexpected but very important phone call with my youngest son back in England. These moments are so treasured by me, and more so when he reaches out to me for help, especially when all these miles seperate us. Call done, it was then back to our road trip.
This morning we had planned our route to see the various covered bridges that are in Madison County. Of course we just had to go see the two famous ones - Roseman Covered Bridge and Holliwell Covered Bridge.

Roseman Covered Bridge was built in 1883 and originally gained fame as a haunted bridge in 1892 before rising to fame once again in the hit movie Bridges of Madison County. It has one of the longest approaches of any of the covered bridges and is still in its original location.
Holliwell Covered Bridge was originally built in 1880 and is the 2nd bridge from the movie. It is the longest covered bridge built in Madison County and the longest remaining timber bridge of Iowa.
There are several more in the area and the Covered Bridges Scenic Byway is a great way to explore them, alongside many other interesting places, like John Waynes birthplace, so it is definately an area you can spend a lot of time exploring!
The weather has been beautiful for us, and thankfully warmer too, which is a welcome relief after the bitter cold of New York City! During our drive round today we even managed to do a spot of off roading in Wanda2 when we encountered an unexpected small ford across a river. Fred was 100% sure our weight wouldn't have us sinking in it, and luckily we had no such drama!!
On an interesting and seperate note to things; I did find out that this area is currently experiencing a drought so everywhere is very dry & dusty. We couldn't help but notice that many of the minor roads around this part of the US are only gravel roads, so you don't half kick up a dust cloud as your travel around. In theory it keeps your speed down, but it didn't always seem to be the case with other drivers, especially trucks! Tarmac (or black top) only seems to be on the major roads.

Then it was time to hit the road again and get to Omaha, Fred's birthplace and somewhere he has not been to since he was about a year old. We've not such a long journey, only 100+ miles to reach our campsite West Omaha, KAO Holiday park.
The campsite is another big one but very nicely laid out and we have a lovely pitch with nice sunset views, which we made the most of with a glass of wine whilst reclining in the provided patio chairs.
Oh and about those dust clouds we had created on our travels earlier today... well we found out that Wanda2 clearly has some extra unknown holes in her. When we opened some of the cupboards this evening they were full of dust! So, an unplanned evening of cleaning ensued.

Road Trip Day 12 - we've driven approximately 170 Miles today!
